MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Jail Decongestion team of Humanitarian Legal Assistance Foundation, Inc. (HLAF), in partnership with the University of Santo Tomas Civil Law, conducted a jail visit at Manila City Jail Male Dorm last April 9 as part of the immersion program for UST Civil Law students.
Present during the jail visit are nine UST Civil Law students headed by Bion Henrik Priolo, Clinical Legal Education (CLED) students of Ateneo School of Law Bret Monsanto and Vianca Layno, and the jail decongestion team led by Mr. Juanito Vinluan and Mr. Melvin Caymo.
Upon the jail visit, Paralegal Officers JO3 Malou Telan and JO1 Ryna Sarino were met to assist the UST Civil Law students during the case consultation and interview. According to JO3 Telan, as of April 6, 2018, the total number of jail population in Manila City Jail male dorm is 5,454; total number of releases is 37; and the total number of commit is 33.
Certificate of recognition was given to JO3 Telan. Foods were also distributed to the Persons Deprived of Liberty’s Paralegal coordinator and 20 PDL's beneficiaries of case consultations and interview.
On the other hand, jail decongestion team’s Atty. Aubree Sadural and Mr. Alfredo Alaras led the jail visitation at Quezon City Jail Female Dorm with 10 UST Civil Law students. They met with the Deputy Warden of the QC FeD J/SInsp. Erlinda Turaray who assisted and welcomed the students and the staff from HLAF conducted the jail visit.
The total number of case follow up is 25. Moreover, the inmates from QC FeD also presented their handmade products which piqued the interests of the students to buy their products.
