Together with the Clinical Legal Education (CLED) students from Ateneo School of Law, Jail Decongestion team of Humanitarian Legal Assistance Foundation, Inc. (HLAF) conducted series of jail visits and case consultations at Mandaluyong City Jail Female and Male Dorm, Malabon City Jail Female and Male Dorm, and Antipolo City Jail last April 17, 19, and 21 respectively.
Jail visit and case consultation at Mandaluyong City Jail last April 17 was led by Jail Decongestion team Mr. Juanito Vinluan and Mr. Melvin Caymo with two CLED students. The team met with Paralegal Officer JO1 Rose Dote. According to JO1 Dote, the total number of jail population in Mandaluyong City Jail Male Dorm is 777 and two Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) were released. While the current jail population of Mandaluyong City Jail Female Dorm is 124, according to JO1 Arevalo. Moreover, CLED students conducted case interview with PDLs having urgent case status.
Following the Mandaluyong City Jail visit, last April 19, JD team led by Mr. Alfredo Alaras and Mr. Melvin Caymo with two CLED students visited Malabon City Jail Female and Male Dorm for case consultation and interview and met SJO4 Allan Plaza and JO1 Pagiuo. Upon the case consultation, the following data were obtained: total number of jail population in Malabon City Jail Male Dorm is 1,200; total number of releases is 7; and total number of commit is 15. Meanwhile, the total number of jail population in Malabon City Jail Female Dorm according to JO1 Nelson Rin is 791.
Jail visit and Jail Decongestion Project 2018 at Antipolo City Jail was led by JD team Mr. Alfredo Alaras and Mr. Melvin Caymo, with Ateneo Law Alumni Association which provided lawyers to assist more or less 200 PDLs. Also, HLAF donated one unit portable speaker with AC DC charger and one unit wireless microphone to Supt Mirasol V. Vitor, MPA, jail warden on Antipolo City Jail.
The team also met with Paralegal Officer JO2 Chin-Chin Rivera of Chief Record Section. Data obtained was the total number of Antipolo City Jail population which is 1,300. Moreover, Nester Mendoza, CLED student, and Ateneo Law conducted Paralegal Training with PDLs.
