For the kick-off of training this 2019, the mentors of the Strengthening Implementers by Mentoring and Uplifting Local Actors (SIMULA) and the Humanitarian Legal Assistance Foundation, Inc. (HLAF) gathered the barangays from Itogon, Benguet and San Miguel, Bulacan for the Training of Trainers as part of the module to strengthen their Barangay Councils for the Protection of Children (BCPC) last January 14-16 at Girls Scout of the Philippines Ating Tahanan National Program and Training Center.
SIMULA mentors present during the Training of Trainers were Ms. Nelly Medina from DSWD Institutional Development Division, Ms. Sherryl Santos from DSWD RIACAT-VAWC, Ms. Gelyn Valera from PSWDO Bulacan, Mr. Jonathan Siglos from PSWDO Zambales, Ms. Rosalie Pulga-Abarca from CSWDO Olongapo City, Ms. Maggie Moc-Eng from RRCY III (Region III) and Ms. Laurie Pangda from CSWDO, Ms. Nora Jacinto from RJJWC and Ms. Ruby Lyn Huag from RSCWC (CAR). The barangays present were Brgy. Dalupirip; Brgy. Loacan; Brgy. Ucab; Brgy. Gumatdang; Brgy. Tuding; Brgy. Tinongdan from Itogon, Benguet and Brgy. San Agustin, Brgy. Sta. Rita Bata, Brgy. Camias, and Brgy. San Jose from San Miguel, Bulacan. Atty. Klarisse Estorninos from UNICEF also graced the training together with Atty. Rommel Alim Abitria, Ms. Claudette Almadin, RSW, Mr. Wendell Manaloto, RSW, Ms. Carmelita Torrefiel, Mr. Melvin Caymo and Mr. Peter Olea from HLAF as the training team.
Through the lead of the SIMULA mentors, the participants from the selected barangay taking the BCPC modules were able to learn essential skills that they can use to establish and strengthen their BCPCs. The skills discussed during the training were communication skills, documentation skills, public speaking skills, facilitation skills and training management skills. The barangays also participated in series of simulation workshops in order to hone their learned skills.
The BCPC trainings for areas such as Itogon, Benguet; San Miguel, Bulacan; Daet, Camarines Norte, and Tacloban, Leyte aim to train regional mentors to be able to mentor and coach members of the L/BCPC to strengthen their BCPCs and properly implement juvenile justice. The trainings for the eight modules of BCPC training under SIMULA project is in partnership with UNICEF, DSWD, DILG, Council for the Welfare of Children and Juvenile Justice Welfare Council that started last June 2018 and projected to conclude by March 2019.
The conducted training at GSP Ating Tahanan was the last stretch under the Training of Trainers module. The next SIMULA training will be held on January 27-29 for the mentors and barangays from Daet, Camarines Norte and Tacloban, Leyte to learn about Community Organizing and Child Protection during Emergency/Recovery.
